Abstract: Borophene is a polymorphic two-dimensional (2D) material with many intriguing properties. Owing to the versatile chemical binding of boron and the absence of layered bulk analogues, experimental realization of borophene is a challenging task. Nevertheless, borophene sheets have been synthesized on various metal substrates by using elemental or molecular boron sources and tuning of the synthesis parameters to allow controlled boron assembly into a 2D overlayer. The fabrication of borophene systems exceeding pristine monolayer sheets has also been achieved, which paves the way towards future development of nanoscopic boron-based structures with advanced characteristics. This chapter provides an overview of synthesis and fundamental properties of epitaxial borophene and related low-dimensional systems, primarily addressing experimentally realized systems on metal surfaces.
